Signal, Telegram and Whatsapp

Signal, Telegram, and WhatsApp: Which One Should You Use in 2021?

Signal, Telegram, and WhatsApp are among the most common cellphone applications. Their service and privacy policy affect billions from all over the worldThe new term of service and privacy policy of WhatsApp blows the coals about communication security. With the policy, more personal information about the app users will be shared. People who do not accept the new terms of service will not be able to use the app from February 8, 2021.

Many have believed that personal information and commutation details in danger despite app firms such as WhatsApp, Messenger,    Signal, and Telegram claim the contrary. The WhatsApp’s new introduction has rekindled the debate. Many people want to quit WhatsApp due to the new privacy policy.  For instance, Elon Musk wants people to use Signal instead of Facebook and WhatsApp.

When it comes to secure messaging, you have to know the difference between SMS (Simple messaging service) and e2e (end to end) encrypted messaging. The content of SMS messages is viewable by the intelligence unit, hackers, and the mobile carrier. Therefore, sensitive data sharing via SMS is very risky. Signal, Telegram, and WhatsApp provide e2e encryption on different levels.

E2e encryption, on the other hand, protects data during transmitted and stored. The Internet Service Providers, the app publisher, the law enforcement cannot read the messages except the people engaged in the communication because the encryption keys are only stored locally. Which messaging service submits the best security for you. In this blog, I’m going to discuss the security and privacy provided by three apps: WhatsApp, Signal, and Telegram.

    Why Signal?

The signal is an open-source development provided free of charge by Signal Foundation. The app can send text, video, audio, and picture messages protected by end-to-end encryption. Also, Signal does not store user data and provides you onscreen privacy options, such as app-specific locks, face-blurring anti-surveillance tools, blank notification pop-ups, and disappearing messages.

Telegram vs. Signal and WhatsApp

The telegram was initially launched for iOS on 14 August 2013 and Android in October 2013 by brothers Nikolai and Pavel Durov, and the operation center is in Dubai. The app’s users were 400 million in 2020. With the new service and privacy of WhatsApp, the number of Telegram users reached 500 million at the beginning of 2021.

Telegram provides e2e encrypted calls and optional end-to-end encrypted "secret" chats between two online users on smartphone clients. The app does not provide e2e encryption for cloud chats. Secret Chats, on the other hand, can only be read on the device from which the message was sent and the device that received it. Moreover, secret chat security blocks screenshots of the chat. Telegram does not encrypt all metadata.

Is WhatsApp still Safe to Use?

WhatsApp found by Brian Acton and Jan Koum, both worked as employees of Yahoo, in 2009. Facebook bought the app in 2013. Nowadays, WhatsApp is one of the most commonly used apps all around the world. In 2020 the company claimed WhatsApp logs over 100 million voice calls a day.

WhatsApp, like its rivals such as Signal and Telegram, claims the encrypted messaging service is secure, and it will be secure under the new privacy policy. However, at least two questions throw suspicion on this assertion. First of all, from February 8, 2021, solution providers will manage massages and store some personal information. Facebook can be a solution provider for some business accounts. Facebook will not automatically use messages to inform the ads that we see, but businesses can indirectly do it for their marketing purposes.
The other issue is relating to Facebook, WhatsApp’s parent company. Because Facebook has infamous about personal information sharing, and some believe the company concerts with officials. WhatsApp provides e2e encryption. However, it collects the user’s information such as address book, IP addresses, and connection details, and shares with Facebook.
